What Are the Benefits of Journaling and How to Start?

Posted on

Journaling is like a form of therapy that you do with one particular person — yourself. Perhaps you’ve already kept a diary when you were a kid and considered this was something you’re supposed to grow out of, but journaling has been recommended for numerous different benefits. It can boost creativity, help you improve your writing skills, and change your perspective on situations you encounter.

It's also one of the best ways to keep your memories intact, as with time it can happen that our memory changes and blurs — having a written recolecyion of your thoughts and dreams can be an amazing thing to go back to in a few years.

Organize your thoughts

Keeping a journal helps you organize your thoughts, worries and events that happened to you. Things might seem a bit overwhelming at first, or you might find it hard to make heads and tails out of a situation. The same goes for the goals you’ve set for yourself. Writing something down makes it easier to organize your thoughts and prioritize things. It will also help you set a clear agenda.

Retain your memory

Writing something out can significantly improve your memory of the event — once you write something out on a piece of paper, your brain will make a significant effort to remember it in detail. This is also one of the reasons why some recommend writing out the things you need to remember when studying as your brain will then prioritize that information. The same goes for any other aspect of life, you think is worth remembering, and that’s where keeping a journal comes in. Organizing the events of your days will help you retain it in your memory for longer, and in case you do forget something you’ll be able to open up your journal and refresh your memory.

Learn to view situations from a different perspective

Sometimes all it takes to change your outlook on things is to write it out. Things can seem a lot less scary than they did once they’re written on a piece of paper. It can completely shift your mindset and open up new creative processes and solutions. Additionally, sometimes once you go back to a certain journal entry a few days later you’ll notice your view of the situation has changed once your emotions have faded a bit, and you don’t necessarily feel the same way about something that occurred as you did while it was happening.

Become more aware and self-reflect

There’s no tool better for self-reflection than keeping a journal! Once you write things out you keep them forever. It can be amazing, reading back on something you wrote a year ago and seeing how much you have changed. It can also help highlight what you view as your strengths and flaws, and put things in perspective.

Improve your writing

Naturally, by writing in a journal you’re improving your writing skills in general! It enhances creativity and improves your writing ability along with improving your handwriting if you’re keeping a physical journal instead of a physical one. If you’re initially on the fence about writing, it might even make this your new passion.

Relieve stress

Putting your thoughts, worries, and emotions onto a piece of paper is an amazing method to relieve daily stress. It’s a place you can vent without worrying about hurting anyone's feelings. You’ll feel better once you write out your thoughts and it could even help you realize different ways to resolve some problems. Once it’s written out, you can always come back to it and perhaps you might notice some thought patterns or situations that tend to cause you more stress than others.

I totally agree. I journal all the time and I love going back and reading my journal out loud to my best friend about the year before. It makes me happy, reminds me of the painful moments, and the moments I’ve shown my womanly power!
